COVID-19: YOU’R GETTING A LITTLE TOO CLOSE FOR COVID-19: YOU’R GETTING A LITTLE TOO CLOSE FOR ME…⁣
⁣
Its official, there is a confirmed case of the coronavirus in my office building, luckily not my floor! I knew it has been spreading in New York and the numbers are growing quickly but this is a little too close to home for me. We just fought off the flu and it hit Celine and Ricardo the hardest. The last thing I need is to bring that home to my family. No thank you, it’s better to be safe than sorry.⁣ Our company has not instituted a full work from home schedule as yet. Fortunately they understand how everyone feels and as long as you are capable of being productive at home and feel safer doing so, you are welcome to work from home. That is exactly where I will be. The infected employee began self-quarantine last week and they have requested those that came in close contact with him to work from home for 14 days. They also performed a deep cleaning on the floor which that person worked and have advised us that the office is safe to remain open. I will be WFH the rest of the week but for those that are still going to their offices, I’ve listed some habits to help prevent the spread of illnesses. ⁣
⁣
~Avoid close contact with others who are sick and if you are sick, keep your distance…let’s not shake hands for a while.⁣
⁣
~Or just stay home if you are sick to prevent other from getting sick. ⁣
⁣
~Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, and now that you know you shouldn’t…isn’t it always that much harder to do so!
⁣
~Cover your mouth and nose. When coughing or sneezing, use a tissue or that small part of the inside of your elbow that nobody knows the name of.⁣
⁣
~Clean your hands. Spend 20 seconds washing then with soap and water. Surprising to me how many people thought this was a new concept.⁣
⁣
I hope everyone is safe and it’s important to keep informed of the situation. Make decisions about work, travel, childcare that works best for you. ⁣
⁣
Would you decide to work from home too?⁣

ASTORIA ‘NOT’ IN HEELS???⁣ ⁣ I know, I kno ASTORIA ‘NOT’ IN HEELS???⁣
⁣
I know, I know, I couldn’t believe it either. I am always in heels! It is usually more comfortable for me. If I walk in flats for too long, my heel begins to hurt. But I have seen the error of my ways. And how can I not wear flats when they are these cute leopard loafers. Honestly, I’ve never worn a loafer before and never really liked them either. I tried these on and they were so comfortable that I had to give them a chance. See what happens when you decide to try something new.⁣
⁣
Here in New York, I walk a lot. I commute to the office and I used to wear my heels to commute when I first moved here. I then changed to block heeled booties or other flats but would quickly change into heels in the office. My flats for commuting were for just that…commuting. Now, I am wearing these flats to hang out. I’m so proud of me, lol. I guess it would look weird taking the girls to the playground in my knee high boots. ⁣
⁣
Leopard print goes with everything and they make it easy to be stylish and comfortable. It was a nice day I paired these loafers with this cozy turtleneck from @shopcaribbeancowgirl shopcaribbeancowgirl and pants from @anntaylor Quick, easy outfit for hanging out in the neighborhood with the family. Now wait till you see my sparkly sneakers!⁣

SO WE MEET AGAIN...⁣ ⁣ Following all the great SO WE MEET AGAIN...⁣
⁣
Following all the great support from my last few posts, I wanted to reintroduce myself.⁣
⁣
I’m Andrea, a Caribbean, half-Trini, half-Guyanese, corporate working mom living in New York City. I started my blog, Astoria In Heels, years ago about fashion and style but as my life evolved, so did my blog. I am originally from Miami but have lived in New York For almost nine years now with my husband and our two little girls, Chloé, three years old, and Céline, one year. Working in finance in New York has been no easy task and becoming a mom along the way adds more challenges but I’m happy to take them on. ⁣
⁣
I’m here to share my experiences as a mom and as a woman of color in corporate America and how I manage both. Sometimes I’ll talk about issues at the office and other times I want to share tips and advice that has helped me through my career. You’ll also see me figuring out how to manage this Mom Life on top of career and how to get these two little gorgeous girls to smile at the camera at the same time with me (so not as easy as IG makes it look). Chloé was not having it and gave me her best fake smile🤦🏽‍♀️. Finally there will always be a touch of fashion and style because that’s where I started and still enjoy! Thank you to all that have been on this journey with me and thank you to anyone joining me now.⁣

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY...⁣
To all my Carnival ladies who work hard and play harder. To those who support, cheer on, and constantly raise one another up. Those you can count on to always take a wine! To all my ladies with “No Behavior”!!! When women support one another, amazing things can happen! ⁣

DANCE LIKE EVERYONE IS WATCHING...⁣ ⁣ You ever DANCE LIKE EVERYONE IS WATCHING...⁣
⁣
You ever see those people on the subway who are moving to the sounds on their headphones and wonder if they realize they’re dancing. I usually wish I could join in and hear what they are listening to so I can dance too. I love music, I love to dance. Soca music is life and I love it. It is in my veins! I feel most free when listening and dancing to soca music. It brings people together, sparks joy, and is good for the soul!⁣
⁣
Carnival is music and music is love! Carnival is where you feel free...free to be who you are! Let’s end this week on a positive and dance like everyone is watching! ⁣

HEY COWORKERS...LETS TALK ABOUT BOUNDARIES!⁣ ⁣ HEY COWORKERS...LETS TALK ABOUT BOUNDARIES!⁣
⁣
I made my way to a vacation in Trinidad, enjoying the beautiful weather and the sweet soca! Usually, I’m at work, where I’m “on” all day and I’m always reachable by my work phone. I stay on top of things and don’t fall behind. I had this trip to Trinidad planned for some time and I didn’t even go down for long because Carnival is smack in the middle of my busy time as an accountant, the dreaded ‘Year End’. I originally planned to take 4 days off but changed my flight to leave later for other reasons. I was out of the office for just three days! Everyone at work acted like it was two weeks!!!⁣
⁣
Before I left, everything pending was clearly detailed in an email to the team, they basically just had to keep things moving. Now, why on Tuesday, did I get a text asking if they could call me because they couldn’t tie something out. First, let’s remind everyone, my manager’s former male coworker was chosen to manage the team, having little to no Real Estate experience, over the women already working there. You know what...let him figure it out. When other coworkers are away, I am their coverage, so why is it so hard to cover for me while I’m gone.⁣
⁣
One would say that makes me indispensable but it really doesn’t, I know better. Look coworkers, don’t text me when I take vacation because I know I didn’t leave anyone in a bind and I don’t call you when you go away! I know it wasn’t an emergency. I put my phone on airplane mode so quick! I’m busy down at Carnival, feting, eating all the good food and jumping up on the road. I’M IN SWEET T&T, LEAVE ME ALONE!!! ⁣
